Erica:
Excellent Question! Twitter, like other social media sites are the latest, new, shiny thing that everyone is clamoring to join. But, like any other marketing effort, a plan to strategically use these new marketing channels is like any other business decision. I've faced the same questions you have, and determined after about a week to back off and get my ducks in a row before becoming more active. I've learned:

1 - No, you don't have to follow everyone that is following you...unless there is something to be gained that helps your plan.

2 - Odds are that those with the auto-follow systems turned on could care less about you and why you are on Twitter. You're just a number in their list of 'leads' and they will pepper you with advertising/SPAM at an alarming rate.

3 - Seek out the people you want to follow and hopefully they will follow you back.

4 - Twitter and other social media sites can be enormous 'time sucks' (someone else's term, but very apt) if you let them.

5 - If I don't eat some specific breakfast cereal, will anyone care? Will they care if I do? Unless I'm General Mills or Kellogg's, it makes no difference at all. Ditto for what coffee shop I use or restaurants I eat at.

But, thanks for following! I enjoy your posts.
